The provision of information, advice and advocacy for tenants
- Tenants covered by the Residential Tenancies Act
- Tenants in situations not currently within the scope of the Act
- Flatmate disputes
Duties include:
- Providing accessible and appropriate information and advice on the laws governing different tenancies;
- Assisting tenants to identify the issues arising in their dispute and the organizing of these issues in such a way that will enable them to present their case effectively in mediation, negotiation, the Tenancy Tribunal and Disputes Tribunal;
- Explaining the procedures of the Tenancy and Disputes Tribunals;
- Providing support and assistance during the processes of mediation, negotiation and Tribunal hearings;
- Maintaining complete and accurate files and statistical records in accordance with TPAs prescribed requirements.
Examining the operation of the Residential Tenancies Act and other relevant legislation.
Duties include:
- Identifying issues which arise as priorities for tenants;
- Preparing submissions on the Residential Tenancies Act and other legislation in response to those issues;
- Developing appropriate information/education responses to those issues.
Liaising and networking with relevant government departments, Housing New Zealand, Christchurch City Council, other organizations and community groups and the media.
Duties include:
- Promoting TPA to the wider community;
- Ensuring positive relationships between TPA and relevant organizations;
- Networking with other organizations where people may need to be referred to, in a planned manner, so as to best further the interests of tenants. This involves becoming familiar with such organisations and identifying key people within to work with and refer people to;
- Highlighting housing issues through the media.
