Going Flatting?

Getting Started - Some Helpful Hints

It is a good idea to keep bank statements, all cash receipts and any written notices that pass between yourself and the landlord.

Do not commit yourself to paying rent or bond that you can not afford.

You will need:

Before you Sign the Tenancy Agreement;

Discrimination

You can not be refused accommodation because of your gender, colour, race, ethnic origin, disability, religion, martial status, or because you are pregnant, have children or are unemployed. If you suspect that you are being discriminated against contact:

Tenants Protection Association (phone (03)379-2297)
or
Tenancy services (phone 0800 836262)
or
Human Rights (phone (03)379-2015)

and ask for advice.

Flatmates and Boarders

The Residential Tenancy Act does not cover flatmates or boarders.

We strongly recommend that all parties living together draw up a contract (link opens in a new window) and sign it. The contract should specify what each person's responsibilities are.

If you are entering a boarding situation we recommend that you draw up a contract with the property owner.

If there is anything you do not understand get advice from Tenant's Protection Association or Tenancy Services. AFTERWARDS MAY BE TOO LATE.
